CONS of Living in STONEY CREEK

1. Traffic

Living in Stoney Creek has its advantages and disadvantages, and one of the downsides is dealing with traffic when commuting.

The bottleneck in the area is often caused by the Skyway Bridge or the Red Hill Valley when heading out to Toronto. This can be especially frustrating for Hamilton commuters travelling east toward Toronto.

While the traffic in Stoney Creek isn’t as bad as in central Hamilton, it can still be challenging, particularly with more one-lane roads than neighbouring cities like Burlington or St. Catharines.

2. High property taxes

Property taxes in Hamilton are higher than those in other neighbouring cities, which can be a downside to living in Stoney Creek.

For example, if you were to purchase a million-dollar home in Burlington, you can expect to pay just under $8,000 in property taxes. In contrast, a million-dollar home in Hamilton, while offering potentially more bang for your buck, would come with an average property tax of just over $12,000.

3. Limited nightlife options

Stoney Creek has limited nightlife options. For younger professionals moving to the area, this can be a con.

While the south part of Stoney Creek used to have an older population, the rising home prices in neighbouring cities have attracted more young families and professionals to the area. Unfortunately, Stoney Creek has yet to fully catch up with this demographic shift and doesn’t offer much nightlife entertainment.

On a positive note, Stoney Creek’s proximity to central Hamilton is a plus. Hamilton is just a short drive away and offers various nightlife options for those willing to venture out.

Even so, you can still find a few great bars in Stoney Creek that cater to something a bit more relaxed and laid-back if you’re looking for a casual drink.

4. There’s gentrification going on

Finally, one negative aspect of living in Stoney Creek is the ongoing gentrification in the area.

This phenomenon is not unique to Stoney Creek but is happening throughout Hamilton, particularly in more affordable neighbourhoods. As a result, many original residents of Stoney Creek are being displaced due to the rising real estate prices and cost of living.

While this process can be difficult for those who have called Stoney Creek home for years, it also presents opportunities for new families and businesses to establish themselves in the area. Over time, these new businesses may become Stoney Creek classics and contribute to the growth and revitalization of the community.

The Bottom Line
